Getting a call now gives you plenty of time to practice all year. Turkey hunting is challenging and rewarding; it requires skill, patience, and an understanding of turkey behavior. One of the most critical aspects of successful turkey hunting is mastering calling. It is truly an art form; people even hold competitions for\u00a0turkey\u00a0calling. Turkey calls mimic the sounds of wild turkeys, attracting them closer to the hunter. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Turkeys make a lot of different sounds. The\u00a0main\u00a0calls to master are Yelp, Purr, Cluck, and Cuts. There are various types of turkey calls, each with\u00a0its\u00a0unique characteristics and uses. Learning also requires having an ear for the wild turkey\u2019s actual sound. I recommend finding YouTube instructional videos to help master the calls. Slate calls are known for their ability to produce soft, subtle calls, they are vary verstile.\u00a0This\u00a0is my favorite call to use.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advantages:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Versatile: Slate calls can produce a wide range of sounds, from soft purrs to loud yelps.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Realistic: They offer a natural and lifelike sound.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Compact: Slate calls are relatively easy to carry and use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disadvantages:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Weather sensitivity:\u00a0Slate calls can be affected by moisture, reducing their effectiveness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Learning curve: They require some practice to master.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to Use:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Hold the slate call in your non-dominant hand.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Use the striker to make small ovals for yelps or straight lines for purrs on the surface to create different calls. There is a learning curve to these calls. They consist of a latex reed stretched across a horseshoe-shaped frame.\u00a0By\u00a0manipulating the reed with the tongue and airflow, hunters can produce a wide range of turkey sounds.\u00a0Mouth calls are highly versatile and\u00a0effective\u00a0for close-range calling. They are more fragile than\u00a0modern style\u00a0calls. We had two real wing bone calls and one broke, it\u00a0was a sad day!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advantages:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Traditional: Offers a unique connection to historical turkey hunting practices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Distinctive sound: Produces a unique and effective call.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Lightweight: Easy to carry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disadvantages:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Learning curve: This can be very difficult to master.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Limited volume: Not as loud as other calls.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0-Fragile<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to Use:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Hold the call to your lips, similar to a flute.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Use your lips and diaphragm to suck air, similar to a \u201ckiss\u201d sound air.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Adjust your lip position and airflow to produce different sounds.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mastering the art of turkey calling requires practice and an understanding of the different types of calls available. Each type of call has its advantages and disadvantages, and the best call for you will depend on your hunting style and preference. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether you choose a box call, slate call, mouth call, push-pull call, or wing bone call, \u00a0learning to use these tools effectively can significantly increase your chances of a successful hunt.
