Two pots, a pan, a cutting board, a full set of utensils, the whole thing. Most of it came home unused, and I still spent longer cleaning up than I did eating. Sometimes I didn&rsquo;t even clean and just wiped it down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Somewhere along the way I cut it down to one pot and it&rsquo;s been something I do more often. Anything bigger and you&rsquo;re heating more metal than food. I would say that a lid matters more than people expect, since it cuts your boil time down and saves fuel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Past that: a spork, a knife you&rsquo;re already carrying anyway, and something to grip a hot pot with. A small folding pot lifter or a bandana works. That&rsquo;s the kit. If you&rsquo;re car camping you can be a bit looser about it, but even then I&rsquo;d argue that more cooking utensils mostly just gives you more to clean.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The trick with one pot is cooking in stages rather than trying to do everything at once. Boil, drain if you need to, then build the meal in the same pot. The order of operations does the work that extra pans would.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-31302\" src=\"https:\/\/www.everest.com\/everestdigest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/One-Pot-Is-Enough-Simplifying-Your-Camp-Kitchen_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"288\" height=\"512\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.everest.com\/everestdigest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/One-Pot-Is-Enough-Simplifying-Your-Camp-Kitchen_2.jpg 288w, https:\/\/www.everest.com\/everestdigest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/One-Pot-Is-Enough-Simplifying-Your-Camp-Kitchen_2-281x500.jpg 281w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 288px) 100vw, 288px\" \/><\/h2>\n<h2 id=\"a-few-meals-that-actually-work\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_few_meals_that_actually_work\"><\/span><b>A few meals that actually work<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><b>Sausage and potato skillet.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Sliced pre-cooked sausage and diced baby potatoes, in the pot with a bit of oil. Cover it and let the potatoes soften, stirring now and then. Add whatever other vegetables and the sausages you brought near the end. Salt, pepper, done. This one&rsquo;s forgiving and it fills you up after a long day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Peanut noodles.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Instant ramen or any quick noodle, boiled and drained down to just a splash of water left. Stir in a spoonful of peanut butter, a bit of soy sauce, and hot sauce if you like it. It&rsquo;s ready in under ten minutes and tastes considerably better than it sounds. Almost like a peanut satay dish.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Couscous with whatever.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Couscous just needs boiling water and five minutes off heat, which makes it the laziest camp starch there is. Add a can of chickpeas, some olive oil, and dried herbs. If you brought feta or hard cheese, add those as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Breakfast hash.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Same idea as the sausage skillet but with eggs cracked over top at the end and the lid on for a couple minutes to set them. Pre-cooked bacon or leftover sausage from the night before works fine here. Oh, and don&rsquo;t forget the cheese!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Beans and rice.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Instant rice, a can of black beans, a spoonful of salsa. Not exciting, but it&rsquo;s cheap, it&rsquo;s warm, and it takes almost no effort at the end of a hard day when you don&rsquo;t want to think.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"prep-at-home-not-at-camp\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Prep_at_home_not_at_camp\"><\/span><b>Prep at home, not at camp<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is where most of the time savings actually come from. Dice your onions and other vegetables before you leave. Portion out spices into a small container or a zip bag instead of bringing full shakers. Pre-cook things that take a long time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cutting a couple of vegetables at your kitchen counter takes two minutes. Doing it at camp at night on a wobbly picnic table with a <a class=\"lar-automated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.everest.com\/everestdigest\/go\/flashlights\" 29988  target=\"_blank\">flashlight<\/a> in your mouth takes considerably longer and you&rsquo;ll be less careful about it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"cleanup-is-the-real-payoff\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Cleanup_is_the_real_payoff\"><\/span><b>Cleanup is the real payoff<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I find that cleaning dishes at camp can also take you out of the immersion. One pot means one thing to wash, and that&rsquo;s most of the benefit right there. Scrape it out well, use minimal soap, and pack out or properly dispose of your greywater away from any water source.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sticky pots are the annoying case and can still happen. Luckily, a bit of water heated in the pot loosens most things up in a couple minutes without scrubbing. Food that&rsquo;s warm and filling at the end of a long day is genuinely satisfying in a way it isn&rsquo;t at home, and that has almost nothing to do with how many pans you brought.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pick meals you&rsquo;d actually enjoy eating. Prep what you can before you leave. Bring one pot. That covers most of it, and it leaves you more time to sit around and do nothing, which is usually the point of being out there in the first place.<\/span><\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"I used to bring way too much cooking gear.
