Are all the stakes and poles actually in the bag, or did three stakes wander off into a drawer somewhere last October. Does the stove light on the first try? Has anything perished sitting in a bin all summer, zippers, seals, that kind of thing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This stuff genuinely fails, and it fails randomly. A stake goes missing, nobody notices until they&#8217;re standing on uneven ground trying to improvise with a rock. I&#8217;ve had a stove that worked perfectly in May only to have the fuel locking level break in September, no idea why, just one of those things gear does. There&#8217;s no real cold, or if there is, your house is right there with a working furnace in it. There&#8217;s no decision-making happening, because the stakes are basically zero. If something goes wrong you walk fifteen feet and it&#8217;s solved.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People do a backyard night and walk away thinking &#8220;I did a test run, I&#8217;m ready,&#8221; when what they actually tested was whether their gear functions. Not whether they can handle three degrees and a headlamp and an actual dark forest. Those are different problems, and the backyard only answers one of them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I&#8217;m not saying don&#8217;t go camping in your backyard. If it&#8217;s the only way you can experience camping then all the power to you. Just be prepared for a different experience than what you would have in your backyard.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"new-gear-versus-gear-you-already-trust\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"New_gear_versus_gear_you_already_trust\"><\/span><b>New gear versus gear you already trust<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aside from the cursory glance at all of your gear, if you just bought a tent, a bag, or a stove you&#8217;ve never used, setting it up completely at home is worth doing beyond just the gear check. Figuring out how the poles actually clip in, or how the stove&#8217;s ignition works, is a lot less frustrating to learn in your yard than at a campsite in the dark, fumbling with instructions on your phone with 20% battery left.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If it&#8217;s gear you&#8217;ve used a dozen times and know works, the backyard test isn&#8217;t giving you much. You already know the tent goes up. That time&#8217;s better spent double checking your actual packing list, or looking up what the site conditions are actually going to be like this time of year.
