CUGA VEST - Serious Protection for the Active Dog

CUGA VEST - Serious Protection for the Active Dog

Cruiser (Tipper’s Trouble Cruise, AKC) is a hard charging working retriever and he loves nothing more than to retrieve, mostly upland game that has been brought down in the field. But on training days the hard charging doesn’t stop, “I’m supposed to get that and bring it back, Right??” Good Boy!! That’s my dog!!

But like you, Cruiser and I don’t play in or on easy ground cover. Where we hunt is in countryside that once was or is fenced farm, pasture and grazing lands. We hunt in thickets, draws and scrub. Cruiser knows there is a bird in there and he wants to get it, no matter what!

Sound familiar to you!

After an incident, from who knows what, and then nice visit to the vet and 6 staples to close a chest wound! And then followed the next day of hunting, Cruiser overheating with a neoprene waterfowl vest, that made him pant like a fat man in a foot race, but protected his chest wound. The vest was so poorly fitted that his front leg pits were hamburger after 2 hours in the field. (Hey, don’t judge me, it was opening week of pheasant season and the vet said it was OK! What would you do? The vest worked great when we were hunting ducks!) No hunting, with my dog for two weeks, early season too!! NOT GOOD!!!

After I got home I decided to look for a good dog upland game hunting vest to help my little buddy do his job. After all, I wouldn’t go hunting naked or in a pair of Spandex leotards. I wear brush pants that are thick and have Cordura fabric on the front of them to protect my legs, plus a vest to show where I am (think Dick Cheney here), and hold my ammo and game. Had to be something like that for my dog, right?

Shopping at the stores and online what I found was unacceptable! The vests I found were cheap, poorly fitted and made overseas, pieces of rip stop nylon that wouldn’t protect my dog in an open meadow, let alone Hawthorne scrub or barbed wire.

NOT FOR MY DOG NO WAY!!!!

So I decided I would create something new! I would make Cruiser his own Hunting Vest. A hearty, durable hunting vest! A hunting vest that would protect his front, sides and back from those nasty obstacles we encounter in the field. A hunting vest that would last a lifetime and was washable. Something that fit! It had to let him run like the wind before that bird got too far or would let him swim across that creek to retrieve that fallen foe. It needed to fit so he could scent well but not catch up on things that were in his path. A Don’t Bother Me I am Working Here Hunting Vest!!

But I knew nothing about sewing or putting two pieces of material together or what materials would work. I remember my mom sewing a lot when I was a kid. So I spoke to her and voila!! The CUGA VEST was born!! What a GREAT IDEA!!!

But where do I go from there?

ISN’T THE INTERNET GREAT!!!

Did you know they have material that has Kevlar built right into it? Or Camouflage that is durable, waterproof, and breathable, plus comes not only in Blaze Orange Camouflage but also in Coyote to hide some of that dirt?

So, I up and ordered materials and started to learn to sew. Gotten pretty good too, if I say so myself.

What I made has become CUGA VEST for dogs!!

When my dog trainer saw the new vest he loved it. Plus, with his parents both being a tailor and seamstress as their professions, his eye for detail and quality was invaluable in producing a high quality dog hunting vest.

As I showed Cruiser’s hunting vest to friends and colleagues they all wanted me to make a hunting vest for their dogs, too. Ok, we all like to hunt and have dogs. As George Farquhar said “Necessity, the mother of invention”. BRILLIANT!!!!

If you love your dog, AND I KNOW YOU DO!! you will want a CUGA Vest on your dog when they are in the field, out on a hike or walk or just plain running around. Think, things that go bump in the night, do so in the day, too!

Waterproof, durable, washable, visible and made in the good old United State of America. What more could you ask for?
