The King of the Wild Frontier Crowned in Solid Silver

For millions of Americans eagerly gobbling up stories about their nation’s Wild West Legends, Davy Crockett was indeed the “King of the Wild Frontier” in dozens of dime novels and stage performances. Actor Robert Mayo became typecast as the legendary frontiersman when he played the title role in the 1872 production of Davy Crockett, or Be Sure You're Right, Then Go Ahead. The playbills for the performance featured a photograph of the actor decked out as a heavily mustachioed Davy Crockett clad head to toe in buckskin topped off by a rather unique fox skin cap.

Classic Image of Davy Crockett

Now you can capture that same image thanks to this commemorative round released by the highly respected Intaglio Mint as part of its Wild West Legends series. Struck in a full ounce of highly pure 99.9% fine silver, this silver dollar-sized round features the classic photo of Mayo in full costume below the legend that reads “DAVY CROCKETT” in Western type curved along the circumference. The medal’s reverse shows a logo composed of many iconic Old West images including a sheriff’s badge wrapped with a cowboy’s rope, a horned bull skull, six-shooters and a pair of horseshoes. In addition, the Intaglio Mint One-Ounce Silver Davy Crockett Medals available in this offer come in Gem Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition, meaning that each piece is the product of a superb strike that places it firmly among the elite of the run.

A Real-Life Legend

Despite having many real-life adventures as a frontiersman, explorer, pioneer, folk hero, soldier, and politician, the actual David “Davy” Crockett did not discourage the myths and legends that grew up around him. A three-time congressman from Tennessee, he fought with the Tennessee Militia in the Creek War and later reenlisted to fight in the War of 1812. After being defeated for a seat in Congress in 1835, he famously said, “I told the people of my district that I would serve them as faithfully as I had done; but if not, they might go to hell, and I would go to Texas!” It was there that Crockett died, defending the Alamo in the Texas Revolution against Mexico.
